"Her Bones Catch the Sun" by Aiya Sakr
Over a picture with my hair
exposed,
the first thing a friend
says to me in years,
in a small message on
Facebook, at the bottom of my screen—
"I love you
and I'm worried. Don't forget
that hijab is your crown."
She does not see my hijab at all
and I don't know how to tell her
crowns grow heavy—
and hearts can bear the weight
of modesty.
